This coming October, Stuart will have worked in British television for fifty years; as a reporter, presenter, producer/director and chief executive of ITV. He's travelled to some of the most fascinating and dangerous places in the world, and produced a range of programmes from World in Action to Grumpy Old Men, from Three Men in a Boat to Portrait Artist of the Year.

In the course of his career, Stuart has met every British prime minister from Harold Wilson to David Cameron, he welcomed the Queen to the Royal Variety Performance, and interviewed Ella Fitzgerald as she went on stage on Teesside.  He's made Joan Bakewell laugh and Joan Rivers cry.

Someone told him at an early stage in his career that it would all be fun, and if it wasn’t fun, it would be interesting.  Most of it was fun and interesting.  Some of it was just fun.  Some of it was just interesting.   In this frank and honest memoir, he tells how he navigated an eventful professional career against the background of tumultuous change at work and family tragedies at home.
